Pediatric Dentistry Department
Pediatric Dentistry is a specialized department that focuses on the oral and dental health of individuals from birth through late adolescence (ages 0–15). It provides preventive, protective, and therapeutic care tailored to the needs of children and adolescents. The scope of services includes:
Preventive treatments to reduce the risk of tooth decay
Restoration and treatment of decayed primary and permanent teeth
Extraction of teeth that cannot be restored
Use of space maintainers and appliances to prevent complications from early tooth loss and support proper dental alignment
Diagnosis, treatment, and long-term follow-up of traumatic injuries to teeth and supporting tissues
Monitoring of tooth eruption and development, and prevention of deviations from normal patterns
Preventive and interceptive orthodontic treatments
Diagnosis, treatment, and follow-up of gum diseases in children and adolescents
In addition to healthy children, the department also serves patients with special care needs, including those with chronic systemic conditions, syndromes, and physical and/or intellectual disabilities.
Clinical Workflow
Initial examinations and treatment planning for patients visiting the Pediatric Dentistry Clinics are conducted by specialist pediatric dentists. Postgraduate dental students also participate in providing care under supervision.
If additional imaging is required, patients are referred—along with their parents—to the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Radiology for appropriate radiographic evaluation. Once the treatment plan is finalized, appointments are scheduled for the necessary procedures.
General Anesthesia Services
For patients who are very young, have physical or mental disabilities, cannot cooperate during treatment, or require multiple procedures in a single visit due to long travel distances, dental treatments are performed under general anesthesia in our hospital’s outpatient operating theatre. These procedures are carried out in surgical conditions by a pediatric dentist in collaboration with an anesthesiologist.
Long-Term Monitoring and Preventive Care
After treatment is completed, patients are enrolled in a regular recall program based on their caries risk level and individual needs, as determined by their dentist.
Pediatric Dentistry Clinics should be considered a “dental home” for children—providing consistent care until growth and development are complete. Regular and long-term visits help establish a strong foundation for lifelong oral and dental health.
